That's rough, buddy (UNDERTALE SPOILERS) by peachiekeenie That's rough, buddy (UNDERTALE SPOILERS) by peachiekeenie
My take on maybe why asgore did what he did. Just a character study that once it got into my head, I had to draw it out.

Actually Chara and Asgore cared for one anther like father and Child.

Young one, when I look at you... I'm reminded of the human that fell here long ago... You have the same feeling of hope in your eyes."

Also he planted a lot of golden flowers in his palace (Chara's favorite!"

And the sweeter that said "King Dad" was made by Chara.

i never understood why toriel acted so high and mighty when at the first sign of asgore acting out she LEFT. she didnt try to resolve the conflict and make him see reason she bolted and said nothing and then treats him like trash
rajeriel Featured By Owner Feb 28, 2017
I feel like there are a few different ways to take this, since the time interval between Asriel's death and Toriel's leaving is quite vague. If Toriel spent little or no time trying to convince Asgore that his plan was problematic and unethical, then fine, her own leaving is at least morally ambiguous.

But, again, it's vague, and it seems unlikely that she would leave her grieving husband when they'd just lost their essentially two children at the drop of a hat, when they were so clearly a loving couple and a close-knit family beforehand. I think it's more likely that at least a year or two passed, during which Asgore's plans changed, and since he's the king and holds the ultimate decision-making power, Toriel would've had to choose between breaking things off with her husband and maybe making him change his mind, or staying and condoning murder.

They were a loving couple beforehand, but the loss of their children changed that. Asgore became fixed on a violent option to solve their problems, believing there was no other way, and Toriel disagreed but couldn't persuade him otherwise.

Also bear in mind that Toriel was grieving herself for her children, so if we're going to give Asgore something of a reprieve on this front for planning murder, Toriel should at least get the same for wanting no part of it.

Also, having read further in this thread, the idea of Asgore going out to me ran a bit different. I thought Toriel's idea at the end was for him to take one soul, go out by himself, harvest the other six, and return and break down the barrier. I could be wrong, but given Asgore's military experience (he was the leader of the monsters during the war with the humans, I'm pretty sure), he might have a better chance of success than most other monsters, and rather than having one of his own people commit murder or risk being murdered, he'd take that particular sin and risk on himself, and keep the consciences of his people clean and their lives safe. Asriel, meanwhile, might've been extremely powerful, but I'm pretty sure neither he nor Chara had any real combat experience.

As I said above, there are multiple ways to take this, since we're left with a vague outline of what happened rather than a detailed description. I love this game and I like Toriel and Asgore both, but I don't blame Toriel for leaving (given the interpretation I've described above). I think her heart was in the right place, even if, depending on your interpretation, her actions may have been misguided.

Just throwing in my two cents' worth. Have a nice day and a friendly discussion.
thedraognmaster Featured By Owner Mar 5, 2017
i see your point but like you said they left it so vague but as to your asgore stands a chance

you're dead wrong. military experience and such means nothing when you die to a child. with a knife. guns exist and asgore would be fucking dead. you could say he could go to a grave yard but humans souls would not last long. and if ONE human see's him with anyone around. he's again pretty fucked
Cainmak Featured By Owner Dec 23, 2016  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I agree, but the point is, no one knows how long she was persuading him not to do this - maybe it was a few hours, maybe a few years. We don't know how overwhelmed with grief Asgore was at the moment.
thedraognmaster Featured By Owner Dec 23, 2016
we're never given a time period

but i think its implied that "she was so disgusted by his actions she ran away in the night" or something. could be remembering wrong

the final nail in the coffin was what she said to asgore once she went to save frisk. at that moment i was like "fuck her. should've killed her back in the ruins"
Cainmak Featured By Owner Dec 25, 2016  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I checked the scene again and Toriel's point was that Asgore would have taken one soul and crossed the barrier himself to ask humans for help, but he'd rather stayed and prayed no one would come. Okay, he was a coward, but there are flaws to this logic, a) Asgore would probably got himself killed by the scared humans the same way Asriel had (especially since Asriel was almost a god when he left to the human world and even then he wasn't immune to wounds), b) Chara's soul was already gone by that time, so getting another soul implied KILLING A HUMAN EITHER WAY, so Toriel just demanded Asgore to kill someone. At least the king asked Alphys/Gaster to find another way.
I'm starting to think Toriel really wanted to be a widow.
thedraognmaster Featured By Owner Dec 25, 2016
i completley forgot that she expected him to let a human come down and live there their natural life span that could be 60 or more years

and then go to the human world and expect to be accepted. i started really not liking her towards the end of the game
Cainmak Featured By Owner Dec 26, 2016  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Okay, so let him die of natural causes, cuz time is not an issue... But the fact remains that Asgore had probably the same chances of surviving as Asriel.
Twylyght99 Featured By Owner Nov 30, 2016
I agree with you.  I feel like if she had stayed,  she could have talked Asgore out of going to war with the humans.  She leaves him and hides out in the ruins,  leaving him to take care of the kingdom all by himself!  He could see the people loosing hope and so he did what he had to do to keep their hopes up.
thedraognmaster Featured By Owner Dec 1, 2016
exactly. he came to his senses not too long after he declared it but he couldnt say "yeah no we arent doing that anymore" cause it gave them HOPE for once. they started being happy again. they believed in something and in someone who they thought could save them
Twylyght99 Featured By Owner Dec 1, 2016
Plus,  can a guy who dresses up as Santa every year to deliver presents to all the monsters of the underground be all that bad?  He really was trying.  He even took responsibility for whatever went on in the Underground.  All Toriel did was hide in the ruins and TRIED to protect anyone that fell down in there.  She didn't even do a good job of that.  She hid in the ruins so long that most of the younger monsters didn't even know who she was.
thedraognmaster Featured By Owner Dec 2, 2016
She gives the one man who tried to get stuff done shit. but did nothing about it herself and when she did try she failed. and frisk only won cause main character overpoweredness
atlantart Featured By Owner Dec 27, 2016
Asgore tried his best to help everyone, then got shat on for it by the one person whom he missed the most. I too disliked Toriel more and more as the game went on.
thedraognmaster Featured By Owner Dec 28, 2016
and she never once tried to contact him to make him stop. when he was clearly riddled with guilt
kometax Featured By Owner Jan 22, 2017
I once read thory that Toriel never came back because If she did Asgore and rest of monsterkind would expect her to have solution,
which she hasn't.

I don't think Undyne knew Toriel back then. In the true pacifist rout she had to get confirmation from Asgore that she was his ex.
